Job Description: Director of Marketing for New Media Start-up; Los Angeles, CA

Empirical Path Consulting is a web analytics and market research consultancy seeking a Director of Marketing for a 12-month+ contract to work at a client location in Beverly Hills, CA. Our client is an early stage new media start up with veteran leadership and less than 10 employees. The Director of Marketing will report to the client CEO but be compensated and supported by Empirical Path consultants in Atlanta who currently serve the client.

Responsibilities

The Director of Marketing will plan and execute enhancements to social media, search engine, and other marketing to increase usage of the company’s Web and other digital products. The Director will also propose and execute enhancements to the Web and Digital products themselves. He or she will establish advertising, sponsorship, and other revenue streams for the business (although direct selling is not required). He or she will measure and optimize these efforts using web analytics, web survey, and ad serving software as well as syndicated audience research providers. These efforts will be supported by shared internal client resources, external vendors, and Empirical Path consultants.

Qualifications

The Director of Marketing first and foremost must have demonstrable success in leading the creation of a website user experience, including copy and workflow of web, email and RSS products, that maximizes user-generated content, subscriptions, and other indicators of engagement. Second, the candidate must have hands-on experience with online marketing, particularly via social media and search engines, including both SEO and PPC. Next, the candidate should bring experience with e-commerce stores and digital downloads. Fourth, the candidate should understand approaches to monetizing an audience, particularly via ad networks and exchanges; direct sales experience is not necessary. Fifth, the candidate should have the mindset and approach that all proposed initiatives are supported with research, data and metrics, and that all initiatives in process are tested and optimized with same. Finally, while development and design skills are not required, the ability to create and modify code and graphics will be useful when other resources are unavailable.

Compensation

The Director of Marketing will be a contractor to Empirical Path dedicated to one client for at least 12 months. The majority of compensation will be paid as a fixed monthly fee with the balance paid as a performance bonus each quarter based on achievement of certain website and business goals and metrics.
